Make Your Next Work Vehicle Work for Your Business
2026 Section 179 Tax Benefits on Qualifying GMC Vehicles
A new truck, van, or commercial vehicle can do more than help your business get the job done. It may also provide a significant federal tax deduction.
Section 179 of the Internal Revenue Code allows qualifying businesses to deduct some or all the cost of eligible equipment, including certain GMC trucks, vans and SUVs, when purchased or financed and placed into service during the tax year.
For 2026, businesses may deduct up to $2,560,000 of qualifying Section 179 property, subject to IRS rules and limitations.
Qualifying property acquired after January 19, 2025, may also be eligible for 100% bonus depreciation.
If you're considering adding a GMC Sierra, commercial van, chassis cab or other work vehicle to your business, talk with your tax professional about the potential tax advantages.
What Is Section 179?
Normally, business equipment is depreciated over a number of years.
Section 179 allows qualifying businesses to elect to deduct the cost of eligible equipment in the year it is placed into service, subject to applicable IRS limits.
Vehicles used more than 50% for qualified business purposes may qualify, depending on vehicle type, weight, configuration, and other requirements.
The 6,000-Pound GVWR Rule
You've probably heard that a vehicle weighing more than 6,000 pounds qualifies for a "business vehicle tax deduction." There's more to it than that.
The IRS generally looks at the manufacturer's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, or GVWR, rather than simply what the vehicle weighs sitting on the lot.
Vehicles with a GVWR greater than 6,000 pounds may receive different depreciation treatment than traditional passenger vehicles.
However, certain passenger-oriented SUVs between 6,000 and 14,000 pounds GVWR are subject to a special Section 179 limitation.
Certain commercial vehicles are treated differently, including qualifying:
- Pickup trucks with cargo beds at least 6 feet in interior length
- Cargo vans
- Passenger vans designed to carry more than nine passengers behind the driver
- Chassis-cab vehicles
- Heavy-duty commercial trucks
- Vehicles configured primarily for transporting property
Always consult your tax professional to determine whether a specific vehicle qualifies.
GMC Vehicles That May Qualify
Potential qualifying GMC models include:
GMC Sierra 1500
Certain Sierra 1500 configurations exceed 6,000 pounds GVWR and may qualify based on their equipment and business use.
GMC Sierra HD
Potential qualifying models include:
- Sierra 2500 HD
- Sierra 3500 HD
- Sierra HD Chassis Cab configurations
GMC Savana
Commercial Savana configurations may include:
- Savana Cargo Van
- Savana Passenger Van
- Savana Cutaway
GMC Yukon and Yukon XL
Certain Yukon and Yukon XL configurations exceed 6,000 pounds GVWR.
Because these models are primarily passenger vehicles, they may be subject to the special Section 179 limitation applicable to certain heavy SUVs.
2026 Section 179 Limits
For tax years beginning in 2026:
- Maximum Section 179 deduction: $2,560,000
- The deduction begins to phase out when the total cost of qualifying Section 179 property placed into service during the year exceeds: $4,090,000
- For certain SUVs and other passenger-oriented vehicles weighing more than 6,000 pounds GVWR but not more than 14,000 pounds GVWR, the 2026 Section 179 deduction is generally limited to: $32,000
Different rules apply to certain pickup trucks, vans and commercial vehicles.
What About 100% Bonus Depreciation?
Bonus depreciation is separate from Section 179.
Current federal law provides a permanent 100% additional first-year depreciation deduction for qualifying property acquired after January 19, 2025.
Depending on the vehicle and your tax situation, Section 179 may be used first, followed by bonus depreciation on qualifying remaining basis.
This can potentially produce a substantial first-year deduction for businesses purchasing qualifying work vehicles.
Because of the interaction between Section 179, bonus depreciation, taxable income limitations and vehicle depreciation rules can be complicated, always discuss your purchase with a qualified tax advisor.
